En Mi Casa
September 6 -October 4, 2025
“En Mi Casa” (In My House) is a body of work that explores the psychological narrative of my childhood through a sequence of fragmented memories and emotional events. It reflects on my experience growing up in the same Mexican household since the day I was born. Over time, memories begin to fade, faces blur, objects lose their shape, and you begin to question what was real. Sometimes, it’s not even about what you saw, but what you heard, and what you felt. My work is an intimate dialogue between presence and absence, noise and silence, truth and recollection. At its core, this work confronts the burden of maintaining a picture-perfect family image while living within a chaotic home marked by disruption and male dominance.
To embody these psychological tensions and memories, I turned to 3D papier-mâché as both a material and metaphor way to connect personal memory with cultural tradition. One inspiration comes from my grandfather, who still makes piñatas by hand using cardboard and tissue paper, a craft deeply rooted in Mexican heritage. Another influence is the everyday ritual of hanging clothes on a T-pole clothesline, something I’ve done since childhood. I remember running through the wet blankets flapping in the breeze, imagining the garments coming to life. My imagination would transform sleeves and pant legs into animated forms, interacting as if they had stories of their own. This playful memory has evolved into a body of work that gives shape to invisible figures, expressions of both childhood wonder and unresolved emotional weight.
Artist Statement:
Daisy Velasco is a first-generation Mexican-American painter. She explores the intersections of family, tradition, and psychological drama. In her narrative paintings, she draws from the emotions evoked by a chaotic home environment, where disruption and male dominance are common. The process of creating her work often involves photographing her family and drawing on theatrical practices. She explores visual anomalies within familiar environments, from her home to her slightly off-kilter backyard. These surreal distortions are inspired by a Mexican family household. The composition she creates challenges the expectations of how space can be occupied, reflecting on both the beauty and complexity of her upbringing. These elements play a significant role in the psychological encounter between figures and their environment. La Familia (family) is incredibly important in Mexican culture; it carries a sense of dignity, honor, and a deep respect for her tradition.
“I am looking forward to this opportunity to work with Blue Roof Residency. I'm anticipating the opportunity to develop my artistic ability and to help me connect to the community of LA. Through this residency, I hope to immerse myself in a space that encourages experimentation, allowing me to push the boundaries of my visual language and explore new perspectives within my work.”
