Blue Roof Artist Residency

Apply

  • Inspired by the words of author Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own provides women artists with financial resources and a space to work so they can explore materials, investigate ideas and create in a dedicated space outside of their homes free from distractions and everyday responsibilities. Our definition of who is an artist and what is art is broad, untethered to an established art world definition and advanced degrees are not required. Mothers, self-taught artists and artists whose practices are informed and acquired by familial legacies of making are encouraged to apply.

A Room of One’s Own artist residency was created to address a lack of affordable studio space, the gender wage gap in both art and non-art related industries, and the lack of access offering art-related opportunities to historically marginalized people in Los Angeles. We commit to prioritizing artists from our immediate community in our application process.

  • A four month residency (3 terms available)

    January - April

    May - August

    September - December

A private studio for the duration of the residency

A culminating 1 month exhibition on-site in our project space during the 4th residency month

    A monthly stipend for materials

    24/7 access to studio

    Secured, gated parking

    Mentorship with an arts professional

Opportunities to engage the community through public artist talks, pre-recorded workshops, and other planned and spontaneous events as they occur during the residency

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
— Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own, 1929
